Holidays Around the World

Holidays Around the World is exactly what it says. I bring you today's holiday from all over the globe and try to give you a little background on it when I think it's necessary.

Children's Day - Japan and South Korea

Japan's Children's Day or kodomo no hi is a National Holiday since 1948. There is a long tradition, from the 8th century, to celebrate children's day twice a year; March 3 for girls and on May 5 for boys. On May 5, also known as tango-no sekku, they fly carp streamers outside, display Samurai dolls, and eat chimaki or zongzi.

In South Korea, parents often give presents to their children, as well as spend time with them. The children are taken on excursions to zoos and museums.

Cinco de Mayo - Mexico and USA

It is celebrated nationwide in the United States and regionally in Mexico, primarily in the state of Puebla. The date is observed in the United States as a celebration of Mexican heritage and pride, and to commemorate the cause of freedom and democracy during the first years of the American Civil War. In the state of Puebla, the date is observed to commemorate the Mexican army's unlikely victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862, under the leadership of General Ignacio Zaragoza Seguin.
